What do the community labels mean?

Community is one of the two settings at the top of the Gaytherings homepage, alongside location. It filters every list on the page down to events centered on a particular part of the community.

These are event groupings, not identities

Before the list: these labels describe events, not people. They're not a set of boxes we think anyone should fit into, and they're not a sexuality or gender selector. They're a way of grouping events so a lesbian party and a trans social don't get lost in the same undifferentiated feed.

Nobody sees what you've picked, and picking one says nothing about who you are. Switch between them as often as you like.

The labels

  • All LGBTQIA+ events. Everything in your location, no community filter applied. This is where every session starts.
  • Lesbian. Events centered on lesbian communities.
  • Gay. Events centered on gay men's communities.
  • Trans and nonbinary. Events centered on trans and nonbinary communities.
  • Queer+. Events centered on bi, pan, ace, and other queer identities or subcultures.
  • Mixed. Events with a broad LGBTQ+ and ally crowd, not identity-specific.

Each label has an info icon in the selector with the same short definition, so you don't have to leave the page to check.

These describe the event, not you

An organizer picks the label that fits the crowd they're building for. Choosing a community on Gaytherings doesn't say anything about who you are, and nobody sees what you've selected. It's a filter, not a profile.

Nothing here is a door policy either. A label tells you who an event is centered on, and the organizer's own event page tells you the rest.

Switching between them

Change community any time from the bar at the top of the Gaytherings homepage, as often as you like. Signed in, we remember the last one you used so the page doesn't reset on your next visit. Not signed in, every visit starts at all LGBTQIA+ events.
